Do You Think I Get Adjusted Too?

One day I asked a few of my patients a simple question:

"Do you think I get adjusted too?"

The answers were interesting.

Some immediately said, "Of course you do!"

Others looked surprised and replied, "No, I didn't think you needed to. You ok?"

That response highlights one of the biggest misconceptions about chiropractic care.

Many people believe chiropractic is only for when something hurts. If your back is sore, your neck is stiff, or you have headaches, then you get adjusted. Once the symptoms are gone, you're "fixed."

But that's not how I view chiropractic for myself, and it's not how I explain it to my patients.

I get adjusted regularly, not because I am broken, injured, or in pain. I get adjusted because I want my body functioning at its best.

Just like I brush my teeth before I have a cavity, exercise before I lose strength, and eat healthy foods before I develop disease, I choose to care for my nervous system before problems show up.

Your nervous system controls and coordinates every function in your body. When there is stress on the spine and nervous system, your body must work harder to adapt. Over time, that can affect how well you move, recover, sleep, handle stress, and function overall.

Life places demands on all of us.

As a chiropractor, I spend hours bending, lifting, adjusting spines, working at a computer, driving between locations, exercising, and keeping up with family life. My spine experiences stress just like anyone else's.

Regular chiropractic checkups help me stay aware of how my body is adapting to those stresses and help me function at my best.

One of the reasons I became a chiropractor is because I believe in the principles I teach. It would be difficult to encourage others to prioritize their health if I wasn't willing to do the same.

So, do I get adjusted?

Absolutely.

Not because something is wrong with me.

Because I want to give my body the best opportunity to do what it was designed to do.

After all, chiropractors are human too.
