Inductive vs. Deductive Reasoning: Why It Matters in Chiropractic

One of the biggest things I learned in chiropractic school wasn't just anatomy, neurology, or how to adjust a spine. It was learning how to think.

Dr. Richard Stephenson's Chiropractic Textbook spends a lot of time discussing two different ways of reasoning: inductive and deductive reasoning, and the longer I've been in practice the more I've realized it's one of the most important concepts in chiropractic.

Most healthcare uses inductive reasoning.

Inductive reasoning starts with observations.

You collect symptoms, run tests, gather statistics, compare people with similar conditions, and then arrive at the most likely conclusion.

Someone has back pain +
Study shows a certain treatment helps =
Therefore, that treatment is recommended.

There's absolutely value in this approach, and modern medicine has accomplished incredible things because of it, but is that treatment the best option for everyone?  

Chiropractic asks a different question.

Chiropractic begins with a premise.

Deductive reasoning starts with a principle that is accepted as true for everything, and works downward from there.  My mentor Arno taught me that.  Teach from principal.  

The major premise/principal in chiropractic is simple:

The body is designed to heal, regulate, and coordinate itself through the nervous system.

If that's true...

...then interference to that system matters.

...then restoring normal communication should improve the body's ability to function.

...then chiropractic isn't really about treating headaches, neck pain, or sciatica.

It's about removing interference so the body can do what it was designed to do.

Whether someone's complaint improves is important—but it's not the entire purpose.

Why this matters

People often ask me,

"Can chiropractic help with...?"

The honest answer is usually:

"I don't know." Not because chiropractic can't help, but because I don't know what your body is capable of once it's functioning with less interference.

I've seen people start sleeping better.

I've seen chronic headaches disappear.

I've seen babies become less fussy.

I've seen athletes recover faster.

I've also seen people whose pain changed only gradually, but their energy, mobility, resilience, or overall health improved in ways they never expected.

None of those outcomes are guarantees.

They're simply examples of what can happen when the nervous system is working more efficiently.

This is why I don't chase symptoms.

If all I ever focused on was making pain disappear, I'd probably stop care the moment someone felt better.

But symptoms are often the last thing to appear when something is wrong and the first thing to disappear as healing begins.

That doesn't necessarily mean the underlying problem has fully resolved.

It's the classic example of an iceberg:

sypmtoms = tip of the iceberg

underlying cause = the biggest part of the iceberg which is underwater and difficult to see and comprehend.  

The body deserves more respect than simply asking whether something hurts today.

My perspective after 17 years

After nearly two decades in practice, I've become even more convinced that chiropractic is less about "fixing backs" and more about helping people function at a higher level.

Pain gets people's attention.  Function changes lives.  read that again

That's why I don't just look at where it hurts.

I look at how your spine and nervous system are functioning as a whole.

Because whether you're two weeks old or ninety-two years old, your nervous system is running the show.

Everything else depends on it.

Final thoughts

You don't have to agree with every philosophical principle in chiropractic.

Healthy questions are good.

Healthy discussion is good.

But understanding the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning helps explain why chiropractors sometimes approach health differently than other healthcare providers.

We're not ignoring the evidence.

We're simply starting from a different question.

Instead of asking, "What disease does this person have?"

We ask,

"How well is this person's body functioning?"

And for me, that's a question worth asking every single day.
